DEPOSITS OF MANGANESE ORE IN ARIZONA. By E. JONES, Jr., and F. RANSOME. INTRODUCTION. By E. JONES, Jr. FIELD WORK. Deposits of manganese ore have long been known in some of the old mining districts of Arizona, notably in the Bisbee, Tombstone, Globe, and Patagonia districts, but prior to the ore had not.
Where deposits of manganese oxides like those at Tombstone, Arizona, are known to have been derived from the sulphide, alabandite, in association with sulphides of iron, copper, lead, and zinc, it is believed by the writer that the manganese sulphide was oxidized, the manganese taken into solution as the sulphate and transported or moved in some manner to the limestone walls to be later deposited as compact masses of psilomelane.
The Tombstone district is in the Tombstone Hills, a group of scattered mountains that extend northwestward from the Mountains in which the Bisbee district is located. Tombstone is near the northwestern margin of the area, at an altitude of 4, feet or feet above the San Pedro River at Fairbank.
The Tombstone Hills rise to a maximum. All 1, mines in Cochise County, Arizona (Facility) Black Diamond Smelter Site Cochise County Mn Deposits.
